If you know, You know
Our holiday card spoofs the American Eagle denim campaign starring Sydney Sweeney, which went viral for the tagline “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.” The ads played on the sound-alike pun between “jeans” and “genes,” and some versions leaned into “great genes” language. Critics argued that pairing that line with a blonde, blue-eyed celebrity echoed old ideas about “good genes” and racialized beauty standards, while others saw it as harmless denim wordplay. The debate took off online, and American Eagle later said the message was only about jeans.
We borrowed that genes/jeans tension for our own parody, which is why our tagline is:
“Some jeans just aren’t built to last for generations.”
It’s a wink to the campaign’s pun — and for people who know us best (and are up to speed on our family drama), there’s an extra layer to the joke.
